  • Just Cuts’ flexible franchise model drives success
  • Mullets out, anime & influencer Style Cuts on the rise

Owner of Just Cuts Ocean Keys and Warwick, Northern Suburbs resident Julia Crowe, has taken out the top prize at the Just Cuts Conference on Hamilton Island, beating out over 170 salons across Australia to be named Franchisee of the Year.

The mother of two teenage daughters began her career as a Just Cuts Stylist in 2007, choosing to join the franchise for its flexibility.

“I started with Just Cuts as a stylist working Thursday nights and weekends so I could avoid the costs of paying childcare,” said Julia. “I joined Just Cuts Ocean Keys in 2016 as it was 2 minutes from my house, and within 1 week of working there I knew this was salon I wanted to buy.”

“After doing my research and buying the salon with a bank loan in September 2016, I worked hard behind the scenes to grow my business while I was also working as a Stylist on the floor most days.”

“By July 2017 we’d increased our client numbers by 20%, and the business has had an average turnover growth of 17% every year since, including through COVID.”

“In just the last 5 years I’ve been able to grow my turnover by 150%.”

Julia loves her job and her team, who work 7 days in salon to help clients look and feel their best.

“At Just Cuts it’s easy to be a working mum which is so important to me. I’ve got two Stylists who’ve been with me for most of my time here, Margi and Mel, and nearly my whole team have been with me for the last 2-4 years. We’ve endured some trying times together, celebrating the highs and lows of our lives -just like a family, as we spend so much time in salon together.”

Julia says the support built into the Just Cuts model has been a key factor in her success.

“Peer support has been critical, sharing our challenges and successes during the pandemic. I use other Just Cuts Owners as sounding boards to discuss what works and what doesn’t, because I know every challenge I’m facing has already been dealt with by someone else’s salon in our network.”

Julia says there are some interesting hair trends happening right now in the local area.

“Mullets are on the way out which is great,” said Julia. “Our male clients are also now choosing short to mid length Style Cuts instead of the severe fades that have been trending for the past few years“

“One things that’s changing is a lot of young girls are bringing in pictures of their favourite influencers as well as cartoon anime characters they want to look like which is certainly interesting, but that’s what’s so great about working at Just Cuts. The variety of Clients and style requests throughout the day, it’s certainly never boring.

“We are so very fortunate to have enjoyed sustained support from our amazing, local and loyal Clients, some of which have been coming to us for as long as my salon has been open.”
