Just Cuts Engadine Celebrates 30 Years in Business

Just Cuts Engadine owner and stylist Leigh-Anne Brosens is celebrating 30 years in local business, and one of her team has been with her since the day she opened in 1990.

Leigh-Anne says Lynette Grose was the first girl she ever interviewed for a job at her salon, which was the first Just Cuts franchise in Australia.

“Lyn’s been with me since day one,” says Leigh-Anne.

Leigh-Anne decided to open her own salon while working as an apprentice with Just Cuts Founder and Managing Director Denis McFadden.

“I fell pregnant at 23 years old, and I remember talking to my husband about opening up my own salon so I wouldn’t have to be at work every day. I asked Denis and he gave me a go, and after 30 years all 3 of my daughters have now worked with me in my very own salon,” says Leigh-Anne.

Leigh-Anne and Lynette are both grateful for the decades of continued community support from loyal clients, especially after deciding to shut down for 6 weeks due to the onset of COVID-19.

“I’m amazed at how many men waited 6 weeks for us to cut their hair again,” says Leigh-Anne. “It was like Christmas when we reopened, an hour and a half wait every day for 2 weeks.”

“COVID has driven changes for many of my clients - a lot of local men have got used to longer hair in lockdown and I’m not having as many requests for short hair, and they’re coming in during the week rather than on the weekend as they’re now working from home.”

After three decades of styling, Lynette says hairstyles aren’t changing as much as people might think.

“I’ve cut three generations of boys hair, and I’ve got one family of customers whose hair I cut when they were 5 year olds, and now I cut their 5 year old children’s hair,” says Lynette.

“Hair is like fashion, it’s cyclical. I had a 15 year old yesterday ask me for a bowl cut, I told him you’ve come to the right place because when we opened bowl cuts were all the rage. He loved his beautiful little ring around.”

Lynette believes the secret to the Engadine salon’s success is the Just Cuts no appointment, just walk-in model.

“When I first started in the salon with Leigh-Anne, I was surprised at how popular it was.”

“In other salons you might be split between 4-5 different clients at once, but at Just Cuts you concentrate on one client’s hair until you’re done. I think that personal touch will never go out of style.”
