In a flurry of scissors and split ends, a group of Aussie hairdressers has smashed the world record for the most number of haircuts in one day. The group broke the world record today in Sydney's Martin Place in a bid for the Wesley Mission. Sixteen Just Cuts™ hairdressers flew in from salons across Australia, offering free haircuts to all in the attempt to surpass the current Guinness World Record of 359. The group smashed the record by 50 with 409 haircuts completed by 5pm. Wesley Mission's Graeme Cole said the attempt was timed to coincide with Homeless Persons' Week as a way to raise awareness around the issue. He said while many people consider haircuts as a basic upkeep, they are often seen as a luxury that was out of reach for people facing homelessness. "When a person becomes homeless their appearance takes a back seat and things like grooming and haircutting they can no longer afford," he said. Over 100,000 Australians are currently classified as homeless, with an increasing number of women and families represented. "The profile for many years was a single male sleeping on a park bench," he said, "It's now just as likely to be a female and if it's a woman there's usually children in tail." Mr Cole said they were ahead of schedule and were well placed to break the record and had a constant line of customers throughout the day. Sandra Seelinger, 25, from Dee Why, works nearby and said had been keen to take advantage of a free haircut. "I really needed a haircut and I wanted to help out with breaking the record," she said "I'm hoping there will be a big turnout this afternoon and it will be broken." George Carroll, 77, from North Balgowlah said this was the first professional haircut he'd had in fifty years as his late wife had always cut it for him. "I started doing it myself, trimming it with scissors. But this is the first time I've been to a barber in 50 years, because it's for a good cause."
