A Christchurch hairdresser’s lifelong passion has officially become a public treasure. Michael Turner, Franchisee of Just Cuts Hornby in The Hub Shopping Centre, has spent more than two decades collecting hairdressing memorabilia from around the globe and now, his extensive private collection has found a permanent home at Ferrymead Heritage Park.

Trained in London and France, Michael has devoted his life to hairdressing, and his collection reflects that dedication. From antique hairdryers to curling irons from the 1800s, the collection showcases the evolution of tools and trends that have shaped the hairdressing industry across centuries.

“The double garage was getting a bit tight,” laughs Michael, whose collection had previously been on occasional display at The Hub. “To have it now housed at Ferrymead, where people can truly appreciate the craftsmanship and history, is incredibly special.”

When Ferrymead Heritage Park learned about the collection, they saw an opportunity to celebrate a unique part of history. The Park now hosts what is set to become the largest display of hairdressing memorabilia in the Southern Hemisphere, second only to a museum in Barcelona, Spain.

With Salons in every state of Australia, on both the North and South Islands of New Zealand and within the United Kingdom, Just Cuts is also the largest hairdressing company from the Southern Hemisphere. Just Cuts is renowned for its affordable, no-appointment Style Cuts delivered by qualified Stylists for everyone - men, women, and children of any age.

Together with Ferrymead volunteer Edan Bowman, Michael has spent weeks carefully curating the exhibit. Visitors can explore the collection across two areas - upstairs in the main building and inside the newly refurbished heritage barber shop on the park’s main street.

The display includes:

  • Hairdressing tools dating back to the 1800s
  • Early electric hairdryers from the 1950s and 60s
  • Curling irons from the 19th and 20th centuries
  • And many more rare and vintage items that trace the evolution of the profession

“This is more than just a display, it’s a celebration of innovation, style and craftsmanship through the ages,” says Michael. “It’s amazing to look back on where we’ve come from and to wonder what’s next for hairdressing.”

The exhibit is open Thursdays to Sunday in the Exhibition Hall at Ferrymead Heritage Park (50 Ferrymead Park Drive, Ferrymead, Christchurch 8022, New Zealand)

More about Just Cuts:
Just for you. Since 1982.

In 1982, Denis McFadden had to wait three months to vacate a lease he no longer needed, as he had already moved his Sydney salon business. To keep things simple, he decided to hold a promotion offering a “no-appointment” $7 Style Cut for all Clients.

The response was outstanding, and that day marked the moment the Just Cuts brand was born.

Just Cuts is an Australian hairdressing franchise that bridges the gap between a barber and a high-end hair salon. With Salons in every state of Australia, on both the North and South Islands of New Zealand and within the United Kingdom, it is the largest hairdressing company from the Southern Hemisphere.

Based on a fixed-price, no-appointment system, Just Cuts offers Clients affordable haircuts from fully qualified hairdressers and performs over 100,000 Style Cuts per week across the globe.
